60 Something and Stuffed

Stuff...why do we need so much? Every nook and cranny must be filled with the latest glow in the dark gazing ball, collectables, Grandma's flower vase, kitchen gadgets, stuffed animals, hydro hammers and gold tipped screw drivers. The ultimate goal is to cover every flat surface in your home; tables, counter tops, etc. and then panic as you are searching for a place to put it all when someone comes to visit.

You have storage buildings, storage rooms, storage boxes and multiple "junk" drawers. And just when you need tape to wrap that last minute present you search high and low only to find that you cannot remember where you put the tape the last time you used it. So it becomes necessary to jump in the car, drive to the local mega discount store and buy yet another role of tape. But why stop there? You pick up the 3-roll special of the week and at the check out counter grab the latest edition of the the rag magazine which has your horoscope for the next 10 years.

Lesson learned...you do not need as much "stuff" as you think. It doesn't give you comfort or power or the impression to others that you are "doing alright." You will spend your first 60 years collecting it and the last remaining years trying to figure out what to do with it and who to leave it to when you "kick the bucket." Your two-page Will becomes 14 because you want to make sure that the right family member gets Grandma's broach with two missing fake diamonds and that the grandchildren do not fight over who gets the 1928 edition of "Woman's Day" magazine and the copy of the day Elvis died Memphis newspaper.

Advice...don't do it! Don't buy it! Don't keep it! and never, never give someone else your hard earned money to store stuff that you do not remember you have. Make sure that everything you buy can pass the "so what?" test. "But it's pretty" - so what? "But it might be worth something someday" - so what? "But it was my Grandmother's" - so what?

And that's all I have to say about that - so what?
